As I search around the big trees of the Middle Fork, and sometimes in other locations, I measure them. If you scroll down you will find my techniques for measuring them described. If I were a top-notch tree hunter I would have a laser, but they are pretty expensive so I am using tools of less precision.
I am currently not using a GPS to fix the locations. I once owned a GPS and didn't like it. That being said, I will probably get one in the near future. At some point I will probably need to put some GPS locations in. I have considered setting the trees up as Geocaches but I am afraid of the traffic and other activity that might accompany that.
That being said, should I ever find a tree in the record books, I will find the tools to measure and locate it with more accuracy. For now, the trees I have found in the Middle Fork are interesting but not significant.
Which trees do I choose to measure? I was measuring more than I do now. Currently I look for trees that appear to be over 200 feet tall. I then do a paced measure to see about how big they are. If that indicates a height over 200 feet, or if the tree has previously been reported over 200 feet, I will do a string measure.
