Nordrum Fire Lookout

Nordrum Lookout

Nordrum Lookout sits at 1,500' altitude just above the Middle Fork Campground on the Eastern slope of Quartz Mountain. It was constructed in the early 1930's with a 20 foot tower added in 1934. The USFS picture to the left was taken in 1943. The lookout was dismantled and removed during the 1950's.

Dick Kirby loaned me the three photos shown below. They are taken from the lookout in 1934 and provide a full 360 degree panoramic of the Middle Fork Valley. It really is a spectacular look back in time.

Nordrum Today

The Nordrum lookout site today is fully reforested. As you can see in the picture below, all that remains are the concrete pier blocks for the tower and some cable. If you would like to visit the Nordrum site, here are the directions:

From the Middle Fork campground, take the CCC trail. It will cross a small stream then switchback up the hill to an old road grade (this connects with the picnic area). Here the trail turns to the left and follows the grade. If you look across the grade, you will see a subtle trail and an orange flag. Follow the orange flags up the hill. After a short way you will come to a place where the orange flag is on a tree beside an actual trail tread. It leads to the left. Follow this tread up the hill switchbacking a couple of times. Eventually the tread goes away in a brushy little clearing and you will see the remains of the lookout. Mildly entertaining from a historic sense.
