Hiking the Pratt Valley

Looking into the Pratt Valley from across the Middle Fork River on the CCC Road.

The Pratt Valley

The Pratt Valley is a uniquely remote area. As of January 2010, there are no maintained trails into the Pratt. It was heavily logged from 1936 to 1941. A trail bridge was built over the Middle Fork River into the Pratt in the 1960's. It washed out during the mid 1970s (possibly 1976). Since that time, the Pratt has been relatively isolated. The links below will take you to pages that give some clues on how to get into and out of the Pratt.

Use some caution here. You will be far from help, your cell phone probably won't work, and there are opportunities to get into trouble. The Middle Fork River, the Pratt River, and Kaleetan Creek are dangerous, if not impossible, to cross except during dry times like late July through September.

That being said, the Pratt is a magic place.

Distance (one way): approx. 3 miles, Middle Fork trailhead to start of Pratt Valley trail. 7.5 miles from the start of the Pratt Valley Trail to the connector trail to Pratt Lake. 2.3 miles from the Pratt Valley trail to Pratt Lake. (take these distances with a grain of salt, it is frequently hard to tell where these trails begin and end)

Hiking instructions for the Pratt Valley have been divided into three sections. Link below to look at those sections:

Entering the Pratt

There are essentially four ways to get into the Pratt: 1) The Old Middle Fork Trail tread, 2) Fording the Middle Fork river, 3) Using a boat to cross the river, 4) Coming in from Pratt Lake on the connector trail.

The Pratt Valley Trail

This section covers the main Pratt Valley trail.

The Pratt Lake Connector Trail

The Pratt Lake Connector is only informally maintained and poses some challenges. This sections addresses how to enter the Pratt from the up-stream end.
