Hiking the Middle Fork Trail

The Middle Fork trail is the defining trail in the Valley and has a long, rich history. As far back as the late 1890's a trail can be seen on maps up the east and eventually south bank of the Middle Fork river to Goldmyer's Hot Springs and beyond. Today the trail starts at the beautifully rebuilt trailhead at the Wilderness Gateway footbridge. There are many fine online trail guides to this trail and I have given some links below.

Click on the maps above to see an 1898 map showing the Middle Fork trail going by some old cabins (now long gone) near the mouth of the Pratt River and a 1937 map showing the locations of the old rail grades.
This link will take you to directions for finding old growth trees along the Middle Fork Trail. These are the most accessible old growth in the Valley.
Washington Hiking Advisor has concise data on the trail, directions, and distances.
