Marginal Old Growth via a short hike at Denny Creek/h1>

Location: Snoqualmie Pass/Denny Creek

Total distance, round trip: 1-2 miles

Season: Summer-Early Fall

I really wish I could recommend the Franklin Falls trail at Denny Creek for old growth. You will hear and read about a stand of "ancient trees" along this trail. Unfortunately, I would have to say this grove is so dissappointing that I just can't see going there for old growth (unless all you are looking for is a close up picture against a large trunk, you can find that).

There is a group of old cedars along the trail. The one that will catch your eye is the one right by the trail. It does measure almost 10' in diameter (above the side branch coming out) but is only 105 feet tall with the upper section dead.

Back in the woods, behind this tree, are a couple of larger trees but the tallest appears to just be 135 feet tall. If you are going to make the effort to see old growth, you can do a whole lot better in other places, most notably Twin Falls State Park or, for that matter, Seward Park in Seattle.

There is a nice waterfall and it's interesting to see this little wonderland between towering I-90. But, this site is about magnificent old growth!
