Big Tree Art

At middleforkgiants we consider art a key part of our interaction with the forest. To paint the forest is to understand it. To draw the mountains, is to see them. To write about the wilderness is to be there. The following select art is simply to show how we feel about the Middle Fork.

Mike Sandsmark at Hidden Lake Lookout (watercolor pencils, September 2008)

A glacier lily (watercolor pencil, 1999). I drew this after a hike with Bradley to Kaleetan Peak (in the Middle Fork drainage). I have since lost the original and only this image remains, stored in my screen-saver file on my computer.

Raven motif from 2004, there is a deep significance in and around this image for me.

Art from the bookThe Middle Fork: finding significance in a forested valley

Ellie painted this and gave it to me for Christmas 2008 (Ellie Allen, watercolor, 2008)

My favorite picture from the book for many reasons (pencil, 2009).

My best tree drawing so far (pencil, 2009).

I struggled for years to draw or paint Mt. Rainier. Perhaps because I have stared at it so much and know its form so well, I could never quite draw it. For whatever reason, this one worked. (pencil, 2009).

Art of Ellie Allen

When "in the zone" Ellie paints like mad. She was recently recognized with her art being featured in a Seattle Art Walk.

Art in Writing and Film

Zach's and my film and my book seek to show stories from the Middle Fork both personal and historical. Click on the icons to learn more about each.
